I was determined to attend the singles events & perth speed dating planned for this morning. I hadn’t been in town since last month and the little one had just turned 2 so it was time for some me time. The event was a total “turn off”. The new, but not cheap singles venue had promised that their event was “grand” but unfortunately wasn’t very grand. The food was a bit expensive, the venue wasn’t as cool as it should have been, and the organisers were condescending to the customers. If I was to get some free drinks out of this event I was going to make them earn it.
See the post for the number of people in attendance.
I did not get asked out on the date. I did not want to get hung up on, so I wanted to be prepared for the date to end if it ended up being a dud. I was trying to make sure I had the funds to enjoy myself if I didn’t get asked out. If I had met someone really interesting then I would have even tried to go on a second date with them but I was trying to just be open to the idea of a new, nice, single guy coming across me.
The ultimate speed dating experience in Perth
The ultimate speed dating experience for me would have been for the person I was with to have either changed their mind about going on a date with me, or to have left before we got around to speed dating. If I did get approached then I was going to go on the date no matter how silly I felt about it. As I was waiting for the speed dating event I met a friend of a friend who had just returned from the US and wanted to try out a new Australian dating app. I ended up talking to him for about half an hour about dating in the states & how I was currently looking for guys in Australia. I had a good time talking to him, but it didn’t lead to any conversations about speed dating.
Being aware that it would be the “ultimate speed dating experience” I kept my cool as it was my day off so I was trying to be spontaneous but was told that the meeting room was locked. We ended up talking to some of the event staff about where they had gone for speed dating and found out that they were in fact in the cinema. Thankfully they let me borrow their tickets and I could join the queue to get into the cinema.
I don’t think I’ll be lining up for a movie anytime soon. There were around 10 people in front of me so I had a lot of waiting ahead of me. It was a little too early for the movies to start, so most of the guys in front of me were speed dating in Perth. The single guys in the queue were not very interesting, there was the guy in the purple dress (his belt didn’t have a buckle), the guy with the expensive sounding accent, and the guy with the only handbag I had seen all day. I ended up not getting my speed dating ticket as the queue was too long.
A quick chat in the queue
During the time we were waiting for the ticket, the guy I had spoken to during the queue asked if I wanted to go to a nearby bar after the event, and if I had any friends who wanted to go to the singles event. As we talked, we started to look at the others people in the queue. I was pleased to find that there were only a few women in the queue (perhaps that would be a good thing) and all the guys were really cute.
It was a bit of a relief to get into the theatre as it started to get pretty crowded. It was a single guys speed dating event, so we had one of the smallest crowds in the cinema.
The film we saw was called Mamamia’s Fave Singles in Perth. At the start it was very sexist with the clips showing several attractive females who were speed dating in Perth. It made it seem like the single guys in the crowd in Perth were the stupid ones. It then quickly changed gears and the guy’s stories about meeting his friends were hilarious. Even the men that didn’t get asked out (in the crowd) were the funniest. I was sitting between the guy who told me about his perth relationships and the guy who told me about his date to the premiere of Get Out.
